What You Keep

The flat component is what makes small sales expensive. The same fee schedule costs a very different effective rate depending on the order size:

SaleFeesYou receiveEffective rate
$5.00$0.44$4.568.90%
$20.00$0.88$19.124.40%
$50.00$1.75$48.253.50%
$100.00$3.20$96.803.20%
$500.00$14.80$485.202.96%

There Is No Platform Fee

GoFundMe removed its platform fee on personal fundraisers in 2017 and runs on voluntary donor tips instead. What remains is unavoidable card processing, charged per donation.

That "per donation" matters more than the rate. A ยฃ5,000 goal reached through 500 donations of $10 pays the flat fee 500 times; the same total from 50 donations of $100 pays it 50 times.

Donation pattern to raise $5,000Flat fees paidTotal cost
500 ร— $10$150.00$295.00
200 ร— $25$60.00$205.00
100 ร— $50$30.00$175.00
50 ร— $100$15.00$160.00

The Tip Is Not a Fee

At checkout GoFundMe suggests a tip to itself, pre-set to a percentage of the donation. It comes out of the donor's card, not your total, and any donor can set it to zero. It is worth saying so in your campaign description โ€” donors who assume the tip is mandatory sometimes reduce their donation to compensate, which costs you more than the tip does.

Charity Fundraisers Differ

Fundraisers for registered charities run through a separate flow with its own transaction fee, and funds go directly to the charity rather than to an organiser. Check which product you are on before budgeting: the personal and charity rates are not the same.

Charging to Hit a Target Payout

Adding 2.90% to your price under-recovers, because the percentage then applies to the larger amount as well. The correct gross-up divides:

`` charge = (target + flat fees) รท (1 โˆ’ percentage rate) ``

To receiveCharge
$100.00$103.30
$1,000.00$1,030.18

Reducing What You Pay

  • Raise average order value. The flat fee is fixed, so bundling two $20.00 orders
into one $40.00 order saves the second flat charge outright.
  • Watch the optional surcharges. International and currency-conversion fees stack on top
of the base rate and are easy to miss when you price for a domestic market.
  • Negotiate at volume. Most processors will discuss custom rates once you are processing
meaningful monthly volume; the published rate is a starting point, not a law.
  • Do not migrate for 0.2%. The engineering and support cost of changing platforms
usually exceeds a small rate difference for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does GoFundMe take from a $100.00 sale?

$3.20, leaving you $96.80 โ€” an effective rate of 3.20%. Fees are charged on each donation, so shipping and tax may raise the base the percentage applies to.

How do I calculate GoFundMe fees in reverse?

Divide, do not multiply. To receive a specific amount, use charge = (target + flat fees) รท (1 โˆ’ percentage rate). To net $100.00 you need to charge $103.30; simply adding the percentage leaves you short every time.

Are these GoFundMe rates current?

No platform fee on personal fundraisers in most countries; the platform runs on donor tips. Rates change and vary by country, category and plan, so confirm against GoFundMe's own pricing page before setting prices around them.

Can I pass the fee on to the customer?

Sometimes. Surcharging card payments is regulated and prohibited outright in several US states and many countries, and most marketplaces forbid it in their seller terms. Building the cost into your price is the approach that is allowed everywhere.
