BigCommerce Fees at a Glance
BigCommerce charges its fees on the order total.
| Fee | Percentage | Flat | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment processing | 2.59% | $0.49 | โ |
What You Keep
The flat component is what makes small sales expensive. The same fee schedule costs a very different effective rate depending on the order size:
| Sale | Fees | You receive | Effective rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5.00 | $0.62 | $4.38 | 12.39% |
| $20.00 | $1.01 | $18.99 | 5.04% |
| $50.00 | $1.79 | $48.22 | 3.57% |
| $100.00 | $3.08 | $96.92 | 3.08% |
| $500.00 | $13.44 | $486.56 | 2.69% |
No Transaction Fee on Any Plan
BigCommerce is the mainstream platform that does not take a percentage of your sales, including when you use a third-party payment gateway. That is a real structural difference from competitors that add 0.5โ2% for bringing your own processor.
| Cost | BigCommerce |
|---|---|
| Platform transaction fee | 0% |
| Third-party gateway penalty | 0% |
| Payment processing | Your processor's rate |
The Constraint Is Annual Sales Volume
Instead of a percentage, BigCommerce caps annual online sales per plan and moves you up a tier when you exceed it. The cap, not the rate, is what makes the platform more expensive as you grow โ and unlike a percentage it steps rather than scales, so crossing a threshold in December can raise your bill for the whole following year.
Check your trailing twelve-month revenue against your plan's ceiling before a big promotion, not after.
Where the Savings Actually Land
For a store doing $50,000 a month, a 2% third-party gateway penalty elsewhere is $1,000 a month โ far more than any plan difference. If you have a negotiated rate with a specific processor, or need a gateway your platform does not bundle, that structural freedom is the whole argument.
Apps Still Cost
As with any hosted platform, the app ecosystem is where budgets quietly go. Audit installed apps quarterly; the ones you stopped using still bill.
Charging to Hit a Target Payout
Adding 2.59% to your price under-recovers, because the percentage then applies to the larger amount as well. The correct gross-up divides:
``
charge = (target + flat fees) รท (1 โ percentage rate)
``
| To receive | Charge |
|---|---|
| $100.00 | $103.16 |
| $1,000.00 | $1,027.09 |
Reducing What You Pay
- Raise average order value. The flat fee is fixed, so bundling two $20.00 orders
- Watch the optional surcharges. International and currency-conversion fees stack on top
- Negotiate at volume. Most processors will discuss custom rates once you are processing
- Do not migrate for 0.2%. The engineering and support cost of changing platforms
BigCommerce charges no platform transaction fee; the rate shown is its bundled processor.
