Stacking Discounts

Multiple discounts are applied sequentially, not added. A 20% discount followed by 10% off is not 30% total—it's 28% (100 × 0.80 × 0.90 = 72, so 28% off).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate sale price?

Multiply the original price by (1 - discount percentage / 100). For 20% off $50: $50 × (1 - 0.20) = $50 × 0.80 = $40. Or subtract the discount amount: $50 - ($50 × 0.20) = $40.

How do I calculate what percentage discount I got?

Divide the discount amount by the original price and multiply by 100. If you saved $15 on a $60 item: ($15 / $60) × 100 = 25% discount.

Are stacked discounts additive?

No, multiple percentage discounts are multiplicative. 20% off then 10% off equals 28% total (not 30%). Each discount applies to the reduced price: $100 → $80 → $72.
