Terabytes to Kilobytes
Convert terabytes (TB) to kilobytes (KB). Both measure digital storage, and the conversion comes up in computing, storage, internet work.
The Formula
``
kilobytes = terabytes Ć 1000000000
terabytes = kilobytes Ć 1e-9
`
One terabyte is 1,000,000,000 kilobytes, and one kilobyte is 1.0000e-9 terabytes.
Conversion Table
| Terabytes | Kilobytes |
|---|---|
| 1 TB | 1,000,000,000 KB |
| 2 TB | 2,000,000,000 KB |
| 5 TB | 5,000,000,000 KB |
| 10 TB | 10,000,000,000 KB |
| 25 TB | 25,000,000,000 KB |
| 50 TB | 50,000,000,000 KB |
| 100 TB | 100,000,000,000 KB |
| 500 TB | 500,000,000,000 KB |
| 1,000 TB | 1,000,000,000,000 KB |
The Other Direction
| Kilobytes | Terabytes |

| 50 KB | 5.0000e-8 TB |
| 100 KB | 1.0000e-7 TB |
| 500 KB | 5.0000e-7 TB |
| 1,000 KB | 1.0000e-6 TB |
What Each Unit Is
Terabytes (TB) ā 1,000,000,000,000 bytes in decimal usage. The unit of consumer drives since the late 2000s.
Kilobytes (KB) ā 1,000 bytes in decimal usage; 1,024 bytes in the binary convention (properly a kibibyte). The ambiguity dates to early computing, where 1,024 was close enough to "kilo" to reuse the prefix.
A Sense of Scale
A 1 TB drive shows as 931 GiB in Windows- A 4K film master is several TB
- A page of plain text is about 2 KB
- A small icon is 5ā20 KB
Precision
The factor 1000000000 is rounded. For engineering work carry more digits than the table above, and round only at the end ā rounding at each step compounds.
Watch Out For
- This converter uses decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes), which is what drive manufacturers and networks use. Windows reports binary, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as 931 GB.
In Code
`javascript
const terabyteToKilobyte = (value) => value * 1000000000;

How Many Decimals Do You Need?
Rounding the factor costs accuracy, and how much depends on the factor. Converting 137 TB with the factor truncated at each decimal place:
| Decimals kept | Factor | 137 TB becomes | Error |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 1000000000 | 137,000,000,000 | ā |
| 1 | 1000000000 | 137,000,000,000 | ā |
| 2 | 1000000000 | 137,000,000,000 | ā |
| 3 | 1000000000 | 137,000,000,000 | ā |
| 4 | 1000000000 | 137,000,000,000 | ā |
The right number of significant figures is set by your input, not by the converter. If you measured terabytes to three significant figures, the answer in kilobytes is only good to three ā writing more digits claims precision the measurement never had.
