Pints to Gallons
Convert pints (pt) to gallons (gal). Both measure capacity and volume, and the conversion comes up in cooking, chemistry, fuel work.
The Formula
``
gallons = pints × 0.125
pints = gallons × 8
`
One pint is 0.125 gallons, and one gallon is 8 pints.

What Each Unit Is
Pints (pt) — the US liquid pint: half a quart, or 473.176 millilitres. From the Old French pinte; the US kept the pre-1824 English measure.
Gallons (gal) — the US liquid gallon: exactly 3.785411784 litres. The English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, kept by the US after Britain moved on in 1824.
A Sense of Scale
A US pint of beer is 473 mL- A UK pint is 568 mL
- Blood donation takes about a pint
- A US milk jug is 1 gallon
- A car tank is 12–16 gallons
- US fuel economy is miles per gallon
Precision
The factor 0.125 is exact by international agreement, not a rounded approximation. Any imprecision in a result comes from your input, not the conversion.
Watch Out For
- A UK pint is 20% larger than a US pint — 568 mL against 473 mL.
- The UK imperial gallon is 4.546 litres — 20% larger. A "gallon" without a country attached is ambiguous, and US MPG figures look worse when read as imperial.

How Many Decimals Do You Need?
Rounding the factor costs accuracy, and how much depends on the factor. Converting 137 pt with the factor truncated at each decimal place:
| Decimals kept | Factor | 137 pt becomes | Error |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 0 | 100.0000% |
| 1 | 0.1 | 13.7 | 20.0000% |
| 2 | 0.13 | 17.81 | 4.0000% |
| 3 | 0.125 | 17.125 | — |
| 4 | 0.125 | 17.125 | — |
The right number of significant figures is set by your input, not by the converter. If you measured pints to three significant figures, the answer in gallons is only good to three — writing more digits claims precision the measurement never had.
