Kilobytes to Gigabytes
Convert kilobytes (KB) to gigabytes (GB). Both measure digital storage, and the conversion comes up in computing, storage, internet work.
The Formula
``
gigabytes = kilobytes × 0.000001
kilobytes = gigabytes × 1000000
`
One kilobyte is 1.0000e-6 gigabytes, and one gigabyte is 1,000,000 kilobytes.
Conversion Table
| Kilobytes | Gigabytes |
|---|---|
| 1 KB | 1.0000e-6 GB |
| 2 KB | 2.0000e-6 GB |
| 5 KB | 5.0000e-6 GB |
| 10 KB | 1.0000e-5 GB |

| 50 GB | 50,000,000 KB |
| 100 GB | 100,000,000 KB |
| 500 GB | 500,000,000 KB |
| 1,000 GB | 1,000,000,000 KB |
What Each Unit Is
Kilobytes (KB) — 1,000 bytes in decimal usage; 1,024 bytes in the binary convention (properly a kibibyte). The ambiguity dates to early computing, where 1,024 was close enough to "kilo" to reuse the prefix.
Gigabytes (GB) — 1,000,000,000 bytes in decimal usage. The unit of modern storage and mobile data plans.
A Sense of Scale
A page of plain text is about 2 KB- A small icon is 5–20 KB
- An HD film is 4–8 GB
- A phone ships with 128–512 GB
Precision
The factor 0.000001 is rounded. For engineering work carry more digits than the table above, and round only at the end — rounding at each step compounds.
Watch Out For
- This converter uses decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes), which is what drive manufacturers and networks use. Windows reports binary, which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as 931 GB.
In Code
`javascript
const kilobyteToGigabyte = (value) => value * 0.000001;

How Many Decimals Do You Need?
Rounding the factor costs accuracy, and how much depends on the factor. Converting 137 KB with the factor truncated at each decimal place:
| Decimals kept | Factor | 137 KB becomes | Error |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0 | 0 | 100.0000% |
| 1 | 0 | 0 | 100.0000% |
| 2 | 0 | 0 | 100.0000% |
| 3 | 0 | 0 | 100.0000% |
| 4 | 0 | 0 | 100.0000% |
The right number of significant figures is set by your input, not by the converter. If you measured kilobytes to three significant figures, the answer in gigabytes is only good to three — writing more digits claims precision the measurement never had.
